Greek History

This country has a fascinating history as it was part of the Byzantine Empire and under Ottoman rule for nearly four centuries. It is regarded as the cradle of western civilization and being the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, the first Olympic Games, political science and drama

Before the Byzantine and Ottoman’s  ruled the country it saw the rise of the great city states of Athens, Corinth and Sparta, frequently engaged in long struggles for supremacy, and uniting only when faced with the common threat of invasion by the Persian Empire.

Alexander the Great eventually beat off the Persians and united the Greeks. He eventually expanded Greek influence throughout the East and as far as India and Egypt. The empire eventually split apart when Alexander died in 323BC and Greece then became part of the Roman Empire under Emperor Constantine. Greece was apart of the Eastern Empire and the new capital was Constantinople. When the Romans left this was when the country was under the rule of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empire until a brutal War of Independence in 1821 which lasted till 1829 and the Greeks finally had there country back again. In 1833 Otho of Bavaria was installed as King of the country until he was peacefully removed in 1862 when the Greeks chose George I, a Danish price a King of the country and the Monarchy managed to stay in power of the country until 1974.

During World War II the Greeks fell to the Germans and after more people actually died in the resulting civil war then actually died during World War II. Many people emigrated to the Canada, Australia and the USA in search of a better life.
