Intro into Latvia

For hundreds of years Latvia has been controlled by Germany, Sweden, Polish, Lithuania and Russia. They were under control of the Russians when Peter the Great was the leader then the Soviets after World War II. The process that led eventually to Latvia’s present independence began with the accession of Mikhail Gorbachev as Soviet leader in 1985 as he gave more autonomy to Baltic countries.

In 2004 the country celebrated its 35th year of independence, which tells you how many years it has been fought over. Since then they have joined the EU and NATO, which the later making the Russians very uncomfortable.

Latvia is the most popular destination among travelers in the Baltic Region. This is primarily due to the fact that it has attracted the Budget Airlines to the country. As its attracting loads of stag parties from the UK, we don’t recommend coming here on the weekends. We do highly recommend this country and especially the capital Riga, as you can wonder around the historic cobbled stoned streets looking at its beautiful architecture.
