In the 30 years this Scottish Festival continues to follow in the footsteps of Pilgrim Harps who had the vision to plan and organise the first two Harp Festivals in Edinburgh in 1981 and 1982. Since then the Festival has gone from strength to strength and, having used various venues in Edinburgh, Scotland over the years, they have been fortunate to be able to enjoy the excellent facilities at Merchiston Castle School since 2001.

The Orkney Folk Festival is, today, widely regarded as one of the most prolific and special throughout Scotland, the UK and even around the globe.

Entering it's 29th year in 2011, the festival is manned year round by a voluntary committee of around a dozen members - the same principal format upon which it was founded in 1982.

In the early eighties both tourism and traditional music were going through a low period. The summer tourism season was shrinking, and so there was a great need to increase visitor numbers to the islands in the earlier summer months, so that the tourism industry could become more sustainable. Also, at the time, folk music was seen as unfashionable - particularly amongst the younger generations. Today, that has changed the Orkney Folk Festival is one of the most popular island festivals in Scotland.

This is one of the few festivals in Scotland that is family friendly and there is no doubt that the wider beauty of the Outer Hebrides, and the setting of the big blue marquee in the grounds of Lews Castle – overlooking Stornoway harbour – combine to play a big part in the festival's success. The Connect Music Festival was a music festival that took place in the grounds of Inverarary Castle, located on the banks of Loch Fyne in Argyll, Scotland. It was aimed at more mature music fans and the past headliners have included Franz Ferdinand, Beastie Boys and Bjork. The inaugural festival was held in 2007 and was replaced in 2008. It did not take place in 2009, 2010 and 2011 as organisers were blamming high running costs and they felt the effects of the financial crisis.
