Each February, to celebrate the beginning of Lent, Afro-Blocos (carnival floats) consisting of drumming trouples and tireless dancers, parade along an eight-mile circuit culminating in the Encontro dos trios (meeting of bands). Over one and a half million people flood the streets at any time.
